Explore the Pros and Cons of Abolishing Death Penalty

Jointly organised by Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM), Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Malaysia, and the Buddhist Research Society of Malaysia (BRSM), ‘Abolishing Death Penalty, Yes or No?’ Forum will be held on 12 November 2018 (Monday) at 7.30pm at the main hall of Sin Chew Daily Headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

Hot discussions in the community were sparked when the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Liew Vui Keong announced earlier that the government would be tabling a bill on abolishing the death penalty in the coming Parliament meeting. Both the two factions who support and oppose the abolition of the death penalty raised their opinions and thoughts since then. Some people think that the announcement of the government was too hasty and did not sympathise with the public opinion; others think that this abolition can prevent those who were misjudged from suffering the pain of death sentence when in fact they were innocent.

The organising units invite four speakers, including Lim Ai Lin, Liew Chin Tong, Goh Tay Hock, and Sim Beng Shin, who will analyse comprehensively the different viewpoints on the abolition of the death penalty and explore rationally the advantages and disadvantages of the death penalty.

Lim Ai Lin is an author and a social worker. She founded a non-profit company ‘Lita Bay’, combining with a team of medical professionals to help special needs children and people who suffer from emotional trauma. Liew Chin Tong is the Deputy Defense Minister and often provides his opinions on current affairs as a commentator. Goh Tay Hock is a practicing lawyer and guest author of ‘Dew Drops of Dharma’ who also often comments on current affairs. Sim Beng Shin is the Editor-in-Chief of Pumen Magazine with sharp and precise writing. He does not forget concern about the country and society when learning Buddhism. This forum is free of charge and all are welcomed to attend.
